Welcome back Year 6.

Our topic this half term is ‘A child’s War’. Imagine…

A siren sounds, a building crumbles, a Spitfire zooms overhead. Take cover. It’s 1939 and Britain is at war. Deep down in the Anderson shelter, we will learn why nations are fighting and why child evacuees must make the long journey from their homes and families into unknown territory.

We will investigate what happened during the London Blitz, learn about the different wartime leaders of the world, examine letters that were sent from those dreadful trenches and compare our lives now to those that lived 80 years ago. We shall delve deep into a bygone era, when loose lips sunk ships. And, as peace is declared, get ready to celebrate. Mr Churchill says, ‘It’s an unconditional surrender.’

Within our writing and VIPERS lessons we will be exploring extracts from the books 'Goodnight Mr. Tom' and 'The Diary of Anne Frank'. Two amazing and engrossing reads that detail the struggles and emotional challenges the characters experience.

Our first class read!! No Ballet Shoes in Syria...
With the current situation in Afghanistan we felt that it would be good to ensure all children are starting the year with a book that explores attitudes towards those from other cultures and in a broader sense, those whose lives are different to ours.
No Ballet Shoes in Syria is about Aya who is eleven years old and has just arrived in Britain with her mum and baby brother, seeking asylum from war in Syria. When Aya stumbles across a local ballet class, the formidable dance teacher spots her exceptional talent and believes that Aya has the potential to earn a prestigious ballet scholarship.
