Welcome to Year 6 Ash Class

This half term, our Year Six pupils are set for an exciting and enriching journey across the curriculum. This half term, our topic is 'Under the Canopy'. This is based on our geography unit where we are learning lots about forests around the world. We will be comparing different forests and vegetation belts in different countries as well as our own and our local area. This topic links to our class story this term, 'Journey to the River Sea'. This will be read in our Vipers sessions alongside a range of non-fiction texts, which will be linked to our topic.

In Science, we will be continuing and finishing our electricity unit, extending our knowledge of circuits and their components, including factors that influence a circuit. We will use online simulations to test the impact of adding more or less components and we will complete a project based lesson where we will create an electrical survival device as we answer our key question:

"How many men does it take to invent the lightbulbs?"

In Mathematics, we will be focusing on algebra, and then will move onto decimals; including the four operations with decimals. In Writing, our ‘Under the Canopy’ topic will inspire our Setting Description unit where we write a narrative describing the Lost Jungle City. We will then move on to our Characterising Speech unit, using a short animation as our writing stimulus. In RE, out religion this term is Hinduism and we look to answer the question ‘Why do Hindus want to be good?’ We will be answering this questions after identifying what they believe in, looking at Hindu stories and exploring what is important to them including karma, dharma, samsara and moksha.

In DT, we will be linking our topic of forests to our DT project this term. By the end of the unit, we will have created model tree houses using a range of woodwork skills. Please ensure that your child's kit is in school each day. It is also swimming this term too! Year 6’s week will be Monday 19th – Friday 23rd January. Please ensure your child comes to school with a swimming kit, towel and goggles.

In P.E, our class are are looking at a dance from a chosen country this term, and creating our own dances based upon this. This half term, we will now have P.E on Wednesday and Thursday each week. This term, children will be continuing with their CGP books for homework and are to return books to class by Wednesday each week. This is as well as completing  TimesTableRockStars at home and reading, which is to be recorded in their reading record.

Thank you for your continued support.
